EHEIM Digital Connect — Smart Aquarium Control App

EHEIM has been building aquarium hardware since 1949 — filters, feeders, lighting, and water-control systems trusted by hobbyists and professionals across dozens of countries. Their Digital line turned that hardware into an IoT ecosystem: pH controllers, smart feeders, connected filters, LED lighting, and CO2 systems, each capable of reporting its own status and taking commands over a network. The hardware side of that transition was EHEIM's core competency. The software side — the app that makes a shelf of connected devices feel like one coherent system — is where we came in as development partner.

The brief was to build the companion Android app: a control surface that lets an aquarium owner connect, understand, configure, adjust, monitor, and manage every EHEIM Digital device from one place, in real time. That sounds like a standard IoT app problem until you look at the constraint underneath it — the users aren't managing abstract "devices," they're managing a living ecosystem. A pH swing or a filter failure has consequences measured in hours, for animals that can't self-correct. The interface had to carry the emotional weight of "get this wrong and something dies" without ever feeling alarming or, worse, ignorable.

That translated into concrete UX requirements we mapped directly from user behaviour: no guesswork — status has to read as binary, "All Good" or "Action Required," with nothing ambiguous in between. Granular override available for aquascaping experts, without intimidating a first-time smart-filter buyer. Ambient colour and intuitive flow animations so a glance at the phone tells you the tank's state without reading a paragraph of text. A unified design language across hardware spanning three generations of EHEIM products, some far newer than others. And confirmations and guided setup throughout, because "confidence" — not just correctness — was one of the five core UX values we designed against.

On the engineering side, the app has to talk reliably to real embedded hardware over local networks and the cloud, across a device fleet that ranges from brand-new Digital-line products to older EHEIM equipment being bridged into the ecosystem — with zero tolerance for a dropped connection silently leaving a filter or heater in an unknown state.

We treated the product as four layers that had to work as one system: the physical aquarium (the habitat layer), EHEIM Digital hardware (IoT sensing and action — the pH controllers, feeders, filters, and sensors themselves), cloud connectivity (data processing), and the Digital Connect app (control and visualisation). Every design and engineering decision traces back to keeping that chain reliable end to end, because a beautiful app talking to a hardware layer that drops packets is worse than no app at all.

For device-side integration and testing, we built and validated against real embedded targets — Orange Pi and Raspberry Pi boards standing in for and bridging to EHEIM's Digital hardware — inside Android Studio, so the control logic, device pairing, and real-time status flows were tested against actual embedded behaviour rather than simulators. QR-code and network-search device pairing (scan a code on the device, or search the network for EHEIM Digital devices) was built to get a new device connected in seconds, because setup friction is the single biggest churn risk in any connected-hardware product.

The information architecture was rebuilt around the user's actual mental model rather than a flat device list. As one of our design principles put it: users don't just manage a filter, they manage the health of their aquatic ecosystem — so the IA groups everything under Connected Devices, Configuration, and Account, with Device Details, Maintenance Hub, and Smart Scheduling as the working surfaces underneath, instead of a hardware inventory screen bolted onto a settings menu.

The visual design system was built on EHEIM's own legacy of industrial precision — a palette anchored on EHEIM's brand red and a clear action blue against a near-black "EHEIM Dark" for headings and surfaces, with explicit success and warning states so the "no guesswork" principle is enforced by colour, not just copy. Smart Aquarium Networking — the screen showing every connected device across a household's network, from pH controllers to feeders, each tagged to its own local or cloud connection — became the app's home screen, because that's the first thing an owner actually wants to see.

Security and reliability were built in as first-class engineering requirements: the connectivity layer is designed so a lost network connection degrades gracefully rather than leaving critical life-support hardware — filtration, heating, dosing — in an undefined state, and device communication is encrypted end to end, consistent with EHEIM's positioning as a premium, trusted brand in a market where a cheap connected gadget is the norm.

EHEIM Digital Connect is live as the control app for EHEIM's connected aquarium hardware ecosystem, giving owners real-time monitoring and management of filtration, lighting, temperature, CO2, feeding, and water quality from a single Android app, with pairing across QR code scan and network search covering EHEIM's current Digital hardware line.

The "living ecosystem" information architecture — Connected Devices, Configuration, and Account, built around how an aquarium owner actually thinks about their tank rather than how a device inventory is structured — replaced what would otherwise have been a flat, intimidating hardware list. The five UX core values we designed against — clarity, control, visibility, consistency, and confidence — show up directly in the shipped product: binary status states, expert-level override without a beginner-hostile interface, and a visual design system consistent across three generations of EHEIM hardware.

Like most of our builds, this ran roughly 3–6 months from kickoff to launch, with the full design approved before development started.

For EHEIM: Digital Connect extends more than 75 years of hardware trust into a modern connected-product experience, without asking long-time customers to learn a new mental model or newcomers to feel out of their depth.
